Fiji has some of the largest and best developed and
most diverse coral reef
systems in the South West Pacific region. All reef types are represented and
these are fringing reefs, barrier reefs, platform reefs, oceanic ribbon
reefs, drowned reefs, atolls and near atolls.
The largest fringing reef is the Coral Coast reef of Viti Levu...
Fiji's
largest barrier reef is the Great Sea Reef along the Fiji micro plate shelf
edge of northern Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. its lengths of 370 km makes it one
of the longest reefs in the south Pacific.
Atoll reefs formed by volcanic and magma upwelling processes, along the eastern Fiji micro plate
shelf edge through Central Fiji, make up the majority of the Lomaiviti
reefs........
There are 6 distinctively different areas of reef
morphology in Fiji. dynamic processes such as major
ocean currents, tidal currents, effects from
predominating winds, regulate the diversity of the
Coral reef system in Fiji.
The high fishing pressure on most of Fijis reefs has resulted in stressed
fish stocks. several prime food species are heavily over fished.
Crown of Thorn starfish outbreaks are just one sample
consequence of removal through fishing and gleaning of the spectrum of predators of the
juvenile and adult stages.
Most reefs in Fiji are moderately to heavily fished. Some remote island
locations, such as lau group or kadavu, ... depend
alsomst entirley on the ocean as recourse of income.
Mass coral bleaching is occasional and has last occurred in early 2000
affecting reefs all over Fiji at different extent.
